As much as I love the holidays, it fills me with anxiety. In the harried pace of modern day life, it is becoming more and more common for us as women to feel exhausted, dry, uninspired...
Each year, the rush to the Christmas finish line to meet said and unsaid but thought expectations leave me frustrated and wondering about the authenticity of the whole holiday season.
One thing I found that helped me get through xmas anxiety is playing with my crystals. I keep a handful around the house. I have a selenite bowl filled with a variety of gemstones on my desk at my office, by my bed, I even keep a handful of crystals at the edge of my bathtub.
I find that holding Amethyst, Onyx or Labradorite diminishes my anxiety and negativity almost instantly as I tumble the smaller stones in my palms. Over the years I have also purchased larger ones to have them as esoteric home décor around the house.
Cultures around the world have used crystals in healing and meditation practices for thousands of years. But do crystals possess healing powers?
“There’s a long history stretching over thousands of years of the use of crystals for healing and protection, and many forms of meditation for focus and achieving a higher state of consciousness,” says Carol Boote, crystal healer and certified meditation leader. She believes that crystals have an effect on consciousness.
“The use of crystals in meditation practice can deepen your meditation, provide a focus object, and raise your consciousness and awareness of your higher self,” Boote says.
To me crystal healing is like a religion. You either believe that it works or you don’t 😉 And usually whatever we believe in, we portray that true.
There’s no scientific evidence that crystals can aid in healing, meditation, or spiritual pursuits. In fact, there’s very little evidence about crystals at all.

When it comes to crystal meditation, I think the most important thing to do is figuring out what sort of benefits you're looking for and the outcome you're seeking. Perhaps, you are going through stressful times, lack self-esteem or just need some creativity boost. There is a crystal for every intention. Different crystals have very different energies — and while some stones, like clear quartz, are pretty one-size-fits-all when it comes to uses, other stones are much more suited to certain areas of healing. Do your research to find the best crystals for your needs!
Cleansing Crystals before Meditating with Them
You’ll want to cleanse your crystals before you begin. You can do this by any of the following simple ways:
- Pass your crystal through incense. I especially like cleansing them with the smoke of dried white sage.
- Use sound, like chanting, play meditation music or singing bowls.
- Expose your crystal to sunshine or the moonlight for an extended period (a day or a night).
- Setting your crystal under running water or submerge them into ocean water.
How to meditate with crystals?
Just as there are infinite ways to meditate, there are, as well, infinite ways to incorporate crystals into your meditation practice.
Hold them in your hands. Meditating with crystals can be as simple as holding them in your hand and clearing your mind.
Place crystals on your chakras. Chakras are a series of energy points on the body that represent different parts of the physical and spiritual self.
Create a crystal grid to focus on before, during, or after your meditation session. “Crystal grids are often beneficial and used by setting crystals upon sacred geometry shapes to focus on during mediation,” Boote explains. “These can be set up with a specific issue in mind and left to continue their energy work. This may be personal issues or even a larger community or global problems.”
In the bath. If you’re having trouble relaxing, you may find it helpful to mediate with crystals in a hot bath.
