Integrity and The Importance of the Choices We Make in Life
"I know the script is a little too energetic for your taste, but it's the best way to attract the audience's interest." I am on a call with a producer about the script for a program I am considering, which is supposed to depict my work.
The script calls for drama, exaggerated actions, and a version of me that is not who I am. It calls for me to play a different role for the sake of the camera; in other words, it asks for me to play a role for possible income and attention from the public.
The temptation is there; the thought, it won't hurt me for once to be a little more theatrical, to play it up a little.
Many others in the industry do it. Why shouldn't I? Isn't that the reason why many times, I do not receive the program? I play it too real, and it is not overflowing with drama.
The fact is that it does not sit well with me. Changing my persona, who I am, and how I operate, even for a few minutes of video and for a fatter wallet, is not what I have picked my life for.
I respectfully decline and explain that once the "stage lights" turn off, I still need to live with myself, and I still need to be able to speak to my audience, knowing that I did the best I could and didn't betray my personal beliefs and choices.
In other words, I want to choose what's right over what is fun, fast, or effortless.
I believe that we must practice our values rather than simply professing them.
It might outcast us a little or make us lose some opportunities; it is scary to consider the possible losses, but it would be more damaging if we didn't.
At times it will take courage and determination, perhaps like Ulisses, we will have to ask someone to tie us to the mast of the ship to avoid the luring call of the mermaids, but once we stick to our integrity, it becomes more accessible, and each time after we can pick into that famous "gut feeling" to know we are making the correct choice once again.
Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. It is a fundamental value that shapes our behavior, relationships, and decisions. When we have integrity, we uphold our values and principles, even when it's not easy or popular. The choices we make in life are a reflection of our integrity, and they determine the direction of our lives.
